Castolin have
developed a 'hot' metal spray
process specifically for
turbocharger shaft repair.
In the past
shafts were frequently repaired
using a cold process in which a
surface layer of metal was applied
at a temperature below 300'C. The
disadvantage of this method is that
machined surfaces such as keyways
and threads cannot be treated. 'Cold
spray' can also detach at the
slightest impact.
With the
Castolin process the sprayed on
layer is applied at 1150'C and fused
to the parent shaft by further heat
application. This method is highly
resistant to impact and abrasion and
allows full machining of new keyways
and threads without any risk of
delamination.
